Travelling to the USA? The ESTA Price is Set to Increase by Nearly Double

Published on 2 August 2025 at 15:04

Planning a trip to the United States?  There's a significant change you need to know about that could impact your travel budget.  The price of an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is set to increase, from $21 to $40 per person.

This price hike is a result of a new legislative package passed by the US Congress, and while the exact date hasn't been confirmed, it's expected to take effect in the coming months, likely before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.  For savvy travellers, this presents a perfect opportunity to save money by securing your ESTA authorization before the price change.

What is an ESTA?

For those unfamiliar, an ESTA is a mandatory online travel authorization for citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).  It allows you to travel to the US for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a traditional visa. The ESTA is a crucial part of the process, and without it, you won't be permitted to board a US-bound flight or vessel.

It's important to note that an approved ESTA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the US. It simply pre-screens travellers to determine their eligibility to travel under the VWP.  The final decision on entry rests with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the port of entry.

Act Now and Save Money

An ESTA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.  This means that if you're planning to visit the US anytime in the next two years, you can apply for your ESTA now at the current, lower price of $21.  By doing so, you can lock in your authorization and avoid the upcoming price increase, saving yourself a significant amount of money, especially if you're traveling with family or a group.

Important note: You don't need to have a flight booked or a specific travel itinerary to apply for an ESTA.  You can complete the application at any time, and the two-year validity period begins from the date of approval.

How to Apply for an ESTA

Applying for an ESTA is a straightforward process, but it's crucial to use the official government website to avoid falling victim to fraudulent third-party sites that charge unnecessary extra fees.

  • Official Website: Always use the Official U.S Customs and Border Protection ESTA Application Website

  • Information Required: You'll need to provide your passport details, personal information, employment history, and answer a series of eligibility questions. If you're ESTA is not approved you will need to apply for a US Visa.

  • Processing Time: While most applications are approved within minutes, it's recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your travel date to account for any potential delays.

  • Validity: Remember, the ESTA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.  If you get a new passport, you'll need to apply for a new ESTA.

Don't let the impending price increase catch you off guard.  Take a few minutes to complete your ESTA application and secure your travel authorization for the next two years at the current, more affordable price.  It's a simple step that can lead to significant savings for your next American adventure!
