A Winter Wonderland of Bricks: Our Festive Trip to Legoland Windsor at Christmas Time

Published on 3 January 2025 at 12:50

This year Nanna surprised the boys at Christmas, with a minibreak to visit Warner Brothers Studios Tour: The making of Harry Potter.  Tucked in between Christmas and New Year, we took a short 2 night trip to Hemel Hempstead and whilst we were down south looking for other activities for the kids, we found tickets to visit Legoland Windsor at Christmas.  Legoland Windsor is a fantastic place to visit any time of year, but it comes alive during the Christmas season.  Twinkling lights, festive decorations, and a sprinkling of Lego magic transform the park into a winter wonderland.  Our recent visit was nothing short of magical, and I'm here to share all the festive fun with you!

Far from being closed for the season, the park transforms into a spectacular "Legoland at Christmas" event, and we were fortunate enough to take advantage of their special offers and a quieter atmosphere. If you're planning a trip to London during the festive period, here’s why you should seriously consider adding a winter visit to Legoland Windsor to your itinerary.

Why Visit Legoland Windsor in Winter?

The first question most people ask is, "Is Legoland even open in winter?"  Far from being closed for the season, the park transforms into a spectacular "Legoland at Christmas" event, and we were fortunate enough to take advantage of their special offers.  The "Legoland at Christmas" event usually runs from late November to early January on selected dates.  While not all rides are operational due to the cold weather, a significant number of the park's most popular attractions are open, alongside a whole host of festive, brick-filled activities.

For us, the biggest draw was the chance to experience a different side of the park.  Instead of the bustling summer crowds, we found a more relaxed and enchanting atmosphere.  From the moment you step through the entrance, you're greeted with a festive atmosphere. The giant Duplo Christmas tree stands in the main square and the entire park is adorned with twinkling lights and Christmas decorations.  Even Miniland gets a festive makeover, with tiny Lego Minilanders getting into the holiday spirit.

Rides and Attractions

Of course, no trip to Legoland Windsor is complete without enjoying the rides and attractions. Many of the park's popular rides are open during the Christmas season, some even available to ride after dark!  This includes classic rides like The Dragon, Lego City Driving School,  Flight of the Sky Lion and many more.   Some of the rides will also be open after dark.

Festive Experiences

There were lots of additional Christmas-themed activities and experiences. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Father Christmas' Magical Sleigh: Catch Father Christmas as he journeys around the park on his sleigh, accompanied by his dancing elves. It's a performance not to be missed!
  • A World of Festive LEGO Builds: Miniland was a highlight, with miniature Lego Father Christmas figures, sleighs, and reindeer dotted around the famous landmarks.  We spent ages spotting the festive details and taking photos.

  • Ollie's Christmas Chaos: A show where Ollie the Dragon tries to help the elves get all the children's letters to the North Pole in time.
  • The Brick & The Christmas Tree: We headed indoors to "The Brick," where we got to build our own Lego decorations to hang on the Christmas tree.  It was a wonderful, creative break and a fantastic activity for the kids.

  • Build to Give workshop: Where we built Lego hearts and for each one made, a Lego set will be donated to a charity.
  • Meet Lego Santa and Friends: Pose for an "elfie" with Lego Santa or your other favourite Lego characters.
  • Festive Shows and Entertainment: Enjoy a variety of Christmas-themed shows and entertainment throughout the day.

Finding the Best Deals: Booking Between Christmas and New Year

Legoland Windsor often has fantastic deals for their winter event, and booking in advance is key.  We found tickets online for £29 per person, significantly cheaper than the £68 charged on the gate.  By pre-booking our tickets for a date between Christmas and New Year, we secured a great price and guaranteed our entry.  It's a busy time for tourism in London, but because Legoland is on the outskirts, it was a perfect way to escape the central city hustle and get a different kind of festive fun.  You can also save on ticket prices all year around by using Kids Pass.

Practical Tips for Your Winter Visit

  • Book your tickets in advance: This is our number one tip. Not only does it save you money, but it also guarantees you entry on what can be a popular day.
  • Check the opening times: Legoland's opening hours may vary during the Christmas season, so be sure to check the website before your visit.
  • Download the App: The official LEGOLAND app is a must-have. It provides real-time updates on ride availability and queue times, which is particularly useful in winter when some rides may be affected by the weather
  • Arrive early: Even with a pre-booked ticket, arriving early helps you beat any queues at the entrance and gives you a head start on the day's fun.  You then have plenty of time to explore the park and enjoy all the festive activities.
  • Wrap Up Warm: Legoland is a predominantly outdoor park.  Layers are your best friend!  Bring hats, gloves, and scarves for the whole family during winter. We also found that stopping for a hot chocolate from one of the many cafes or pop-up stalls was a perfect way to warm up.
  • Don't miss the Christmas parade: The Christmas parade is a highlight of the day, so be sure to check the schedule and find a good spot to watch it.
  • Visit the shops: The Legoland shops are filled with Christmas-themed Lego sets and merchandise, perfect for finding unique gifts for the Lego fans in your life.

Overall

Visiting Legoland Windsor between Christmas and New Year was the perfect festive treat and an excellent addition to our London trip.  The special atmosphere, reduced crowds, and fantastic value for money made it a truly memorable day out.  If you're a Lego-loving family and find yourself in the UK during the holidays, we would highly recommend a winter trip to Legoland.  It's a magical winter wonderland that proves the fun doesn't stop just because the temperature drops!
